Productivity

We hold a multitude of expectations and assumptions about productivity. The topic has an intimate relationship with self-worth, wellbeing and above all trust.

The problem with productivity is how it is assessed, how boundaries are drawn and measured, and how is interpreted and communicated in a relationship or on a team. Some people are activity oriented, while others are output oriented, and other people are outcome oriented. These are significant different lenses to assess productivity and contribution.

In today’s evolving world of work filled with complexity and uncertainty, the topic is often the source of tension, conflict, mis-understanding and ironically lowers productivity because people find themselves operating from a place of uncertainty, fear and anxiety. If left unaddressed the conversation can move quickly from a discussion about productivity to performance.

Productivity starts with communication, prioritization and alignment. Ask the questions. Clarify answers. Revisit the conversation often.
